Location: Pine Valley Ranger District

Overview: The Dixie National Forest, in partnership with Southern Utah University, is seeking individuals to serve as part of the Pine Valley Recreation crew for the summer of 2023. Interns will support the Dixie National Forest with service related to recreation monitoring and wilderness stewardship, including backcountry trail maintenance and wilderness monitoring. Interns will report daily to the Forest Service and work with Forest Service staff and volunteers to complete assigned tasks. Please specify if you can work out of St. George, Cedar City, or no preference.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide public contacts to visitors as a Forest Service liaison
  • Gain knowledge on a variety of topics not limited to; trail and campsite maintenance, forest conditions, wilderness regulations, Leave No Trace ethics, best practices, and wilderness stewardship information
  • Collect data regarding recreation on dispersed campsites and user-created trails
  • Safely drive road systems using 4x4 vehicles without damaging corridor and infrastructure
  • Selected candidates will be provided training on trail maintenance including hand tool use, backpacking, crosscut and chainsaw logouts, rockwork, brushing, drainage, tread establishment/repair, and rigging
  • Restore illegal and inappropriate campsites and trails to improve habitat, specifically around riparian areas
  • Clean up campsites and day-use areas to mitigate recreation impacts
  • Monitor and document use patterns
  • S212 chainsaw, crosscut saw, radio communication, first aid + CPR and Federal Defensive Driver Certification may be provided.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a US Citizen and pass a background check
  • A current driver’s license with good driving record
  • Open communication skills and the ability to work well with others
  • Exceptional work ethic, enthusiasm, and a high degree of flexibility
  • Commitment to serve on weekends and holidays throughout the summer to monitor high use and low use days in the wilderness
  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule working 9 or 10 hour days, with the possibility of longer 8-day wilderness overnight hitches on occasion
  • Service will consist of a mix of day excursions and pre-scheduled 4 day/3 overnight wilderness hitches
  • Ability to spend long days in the field under varying weather conditions doing strenuous trail labor and monitoring surveys
  • Ability to hike over rough, uneven terrain with packs up to 60lbs in supplies and tools
